Dorset trip 2010
In March, Year 8 embarked on a trip to Osmington Bay, Dorset. When we arrived it was pouring with rain, but we persevered and climbed up a…well it was supposedly a hill… but it was the biggest hill we’ve ever seen! We should have been able to see Lulworth Cove and the spectacular scenery of the Jurassic coastline, but the sea mist obscured our view. We could see the folded strata of Stair Hole and the amazing arch of Durdle Door. After the soaking climb, we drove down to the PGL centre. Our rooms were on top of a hill with great views towards Weymouth. On the Saturday we got woken up at seven, that’s right seven, and no shocker… it was raining, again. In the morning we did activities. Some of the groups, did low ropes and survivor, caking us in mud. The rest of the groups did rock climbing and problem solving. In the afternoon, we went down to Osmington beach and did beach profiling, learnt about longshore drift, and then we hunted for fossils in the clay. Lets just say…people who hunted for fossils…needed a shower afterwards, peoples shoes got stuck in the clay and people slid everywhere! We hoped the teachers would go in after them as it would be a sight to remember.
The next day, it was actually sunny! and we went down to Weymouth. Half of us went to Chesil beach and the other half stayed in Weymouth and looked at the land use in the town. We looked at tourism there and the old and new parts of the town. At lunch time we drove to Chesil beach and ate lunch with the rest of the group, on Portland Bill. Later we went down to the beach and looked at all the sea defences protecting the village of Chiswell, and did some more beach profiling. We finished the afternoon by eating ice cream on the beach.
On the Monday we had to pack our bags and tidy our rooms. Then we did the activities that we hadn’t done on Saturday. We left after lunch and headed back home. After the three hour journey we were back home and well… lets just say…our parents wouldn’t give us a hug until we’d had a shower!
