Report and Photographs
For the second year running I was delighted to be able to accompany pupils from our current Year 5 on their Geography Field Trip to Anglian Water Authority's Education Centre in Leighton Buzzard.
I think there are those of us who might think that this sort of visit is not very exciting but, in fact, I think it is fascinating. So much to learn in such a short time and it was clear to me that the children learnt a great deal about the filtration process and how much work goes into making our water clean.
We were divided into two groups, where one started at the Education Centre and the other visited the Grand Union Canal. The canal, originally called the Grand Junction Canal and built in 1800, helped to speed the movement of goods such as coal, stone and farm produce between Birmingham and London.
Both groups were lucky enough to see the working locks in action and Mrs Piercy-Hughes even helped one of the boat owners - see the pictures below.
Whilst the canal group spotted tell tale signs of times past along the tow path, members of the second group
learnt what measures are taken to provide clean water to households and businesses, along with how the waste is collected, filtered and then processed and returned to our rivers.
We would like to thank Mrs Davies, teacher at the Education Centre (who made us aware of what should or should most definitely not be flushed down our toilets), Mrs Butler for organising the field trip and helpers Mr Chatburn, Mr Batley, Mr Ricca and Mrs Piercy-Hughes.
