Wellingborough School

Twice a week, each Year 2 class has the opportunity to find out what it is like to play a stringed instrument. Every pupil is given a violin or a ‘cello.

The children spend the next 30 minutes with Mr Garfirth and two of our visiting music teachers, Mr Gill (violin) and Mr Jones (cello), learning to play the instruments as a whole class. The results are very encouraging and the children will be giving a performance to parents in the Lent Term.

Replacing the previous Year 2 Music scheme of work with this project was a big step, but the children’s response to it has been very positive and it is clear that the whole experience has been very valuable for them. A significant number of children continued with the violin or the cello in Year 3 this year. Parents of children in Year 2 will be contacted in the Trinity Term and asked if they would like to enrol their children for these private lessons. It is pleasing to note that some children in Year 2 have taken the plunge and started individual lessons already!
