Michaelmas Term 2010

Tuesday 7th September

I always think that if optimism is not rife at the start of September then there is no hope but “have we had a summer holiday?” was a phrase overheard at lunch today from a colleague who was beginning to feel the pace! Pupils who likewise returned with gleaming smiles matched only by their impeccable uniforms are now feeling the chill wind of essays and coursework; very quickly we begin to move into the real business of education : differences of opinion, challenges, failures and successes and these become our focus. Reviews and forward planning pre-occupy us : examination results and their implications for individuals, subjects and departments are the obvious example on which to concentrate but there are many more which mean a teacher’s job is never complete. We are also planning for our very first Whole School Open Morning on Saturday 16th October when, by popular demand, the Senior School will be open at the same time as Pre-Prep and Prep Schools and we encourage current parents, at least those who by and large are satisfied with Wellingborough education, to recommend to friends and relatives that they come to visit us on that morning.

During the vacation Fryer’s House has been completed though a few more chairs would help, Platt’s House similarly has been refurbished but Marsh girls are unfortunately two weeks away from taking up occupancy of their new open-plan House with bespoke spiral staircase which does not lend itself to girls in high heels!

The Rugby season began with a try by the 1st XV in the opening five minutes of their match against Stamford which is unlikely to be bettered in the next three months. The girls’ Hockey sides performed encouragingly well at both Oundle (U16 Development Squad) and Oakham (1st XI) in their pre-season tournaments, CCF marching will improve beyond that seen on Friday afternoon and the first strains of House Singing practices heard through open windows will also, hopefully, improve in the next three weeks.

The New Pupils’ Service on Sunday is a unique opportunity to meet those who have come up from the Prep School or from other schools and help their integration and that of their parents, further. We wish them all a long and happy association with the School.

Finally we are putting together, further to my initial comments on the News Section of the Website, a detailed Report on our Public Examination Results for public consumption because we are hugely proud of what our young people have achieved this year especially at GCSE, however, such is a teacher's lot that there is no time to wallow in any reflected glory because we have a new year and new cohorts to inspire.
