Prep Newsletter - 14th December 2017
For those who managed to make it through the snow on Monday morning, the week began with a beautiful service in the Chapel for Mr and Mrs Bowe.
The Bowes will be leaving us at Christmas after 17 years at Wellingborough School and the Prep School would like to thank them for all they have done in this time and wish them all the best in the future.
This last week has seen Christmas festivities go into overdrive.
In the season of giving, charity has been very much to the fore at Wellingborough Prep School. Tuesday night saw a charity film screening and pupils and staff were looking very festive on Wednesday as they donned their Christmas jumpers. The prize for the best hat went to Thomas Naylor and best jumper went to Hettie Ivory. Thank you to Mrs Ferguson for her work making these charity events happen and to everyone for supporting these events.
Wednesday was also the day of the Club Dance competition. Among some wonderful choreography and movement, Lions were judged to be this year's champions for their winning performance to “Bang Bang”. Thank you to Mrs Whitaker for the organisation and inspiration behind this great event.
Finally, the pupil disco, which was a lovely way to end an exciting Wednesday. The pupils had a hugely enjoyable time and my thanks to the WPSA for their superb orchestration and the staff who gave up their evening to help support and supervise.
Our Carol Service was a beautiful way to end an incredibly busy and action packed term. I would like to thank the Prep School staff for their energy, commitment and dedication to the pupils and School this term. I have watched many pupils grow in confidence in themselves and in their learning and, as a Headmistress, it gives me great pleasure to watch them sparkle and shine.
I wish you and your family a joyful and peaceful Christmas and Happy New Year.
Mrs Knox, Headmistress
On Tuesday some of our Year 8s enjoyed a special VIP lunch in the salubrious surrounds of the Spencer Room. This lunch recognised Year 8 pupils who have achieved an outstanding points average over the course of the term and pupils who have been nominated for exceptional achievements.
Mr Pickett, Deputy Head Pastoral
A huge thank you to all parents and pupils who have supported the charity events held during Michaelmas term. We are very pleased to announce that the total raised so far, including Christmas Jumper Day, is approximately £1,200.00. This is a fantastic start to our fundraising efforts for Harry’s Rainbow. Thank you for your support.

Year 6 Computer Science
Since half term, as part of their Computer Science lessons with Miss Mannion, Year 6 have been working in small teams of two and three to plan, design, make and code a doorbell that will alert a deaf person that someone is at the door. Using junk modelling each team built two components, the transmitter unit (Doorbell) and the receiver unit (Alert box). The pupils then programmed two tiny BBC Microbit computers to communicate via radio channels. They did this using the www.makecode.org website. They then compiled and downloaded the code onto each microbit via a USB lead from the computer and then used AAA batteries to power each unit. With over 30 projects now nearly completed, here are a few examples of the super concepts which were created by the teams in response to this #MakerChampion challenge. The BBC Microbit is a great low cost micro computer that can be easily programmed and has many exciting and fun applications to support students with thier learning and development of computer science and computational thinking skills. Wellingborough Rotary Music Festival
The Wellingborough Rotary Music Festival will take place at various local schools between 5th and 9th March 2018. Should you wish to make a solo or duet class entry for your child, the prospectus and entry form can be found on the festival website, click here and follow the 'Music Festival 2018' link. Here you will find the festival prospectus and an entry form. Completed forms and payment should be submitted directly to the festival organisers. The deadline for entries is Saturday 20th January 2018. Pupils will need to talk with their singing or instrumental teacher to decide on a piece or pieces to be performed within the time limits outlined in the prospectus. It is also necessary to indicate whether the official accompanist is required. Should this be the case, a photocopy or scan of the piano part must be submitted with the entry form and payment. All this information is contained within the prospectus.
Music Lessons and Ensemble Rehearsals
Please note that all individual music lessons and ensemble rehearsals will begin on the first day of next term. Please check the music noticeboard for details. Don't forget to keep practising over the Christmas holiday!
