Prep Newsletter - 2nd February 2018
It was a real pleasure welcoming Mr Kane, artist, to our assembly on Monday.
He ended his talk with a reflection on the importance of striving to pursue a career we are passionate about. The pupils asked some really thoughtful and interesting questions. Thank you Mr Kane. We look forward to our next parent presentation after half term.
Also acknowledged during assembly were Ruben Batchelor and Harry Taylor who were both awarded ‘Player of the Week’ trophies from Olney Rugby Club and Daisy-Mae Crossman and Iris Kirk for their acts of kindness.
As you will know, we had Inspectors into the School this week from the Independent Schools Inspectorate, and we all took great pleasure in showcasing our School to them. Thank you to pupils and parents who completed the surveys and to the pupils who engaged throughout the week with the Inspectors. They were most complimentary about all the pupils they talked to.
A reminder that next week on Friday we are holding a “Colours of the Rainbow” mufti-day in support of our Charity: “Harry’s Rainbow”. We will also hold the Charity Activity Break that day. Thank you to Bears, Jaguars and Lions.
Finally, congratulations to 8WR on a fabulous assembly this morning telling us all about NSPCC World Number Day 2018. All day today, the pupils have been taking part in fun and engaging Maths activities such as “Pointless”. A great way to raise awareness of the important work of the NSPCC.
Good luck to all teams representing the School in Football, Netball and Rugby this weekend.
Mrs Knox, Headmistress
Another busy week with a wide variety of learning opportunities has seen our Year 4 pupils receive the scripts for their play, amidst great excitement, and rehearsals are beginning. Year 5 pupils have travelled into outer space (see report below from Mrs McMillan). Year 6 pupils have looked at healthy living choices during their Life Skills lessons. Year 7 pupils found out more about different religions with their visits to Bhaktivedanta Manor and Bedford Gurdwara. Finally, Year 8 have been dissecting lungs in their Biology lessons and I was glad that I was able to go along and see it firsthand!

Year 5 Stardome Planetarium Visit
The Year 5 Science topic, Earth, Moon and Sun was brought to life by astronomer, Mr Andrew Green. The hall was taken over by his mobile planetarium and the children were able to view 3000 stars in the night sky, whilst enjoying a speedy and somewhat vertiginous visit to various locations in the world. We traced constellation patterns and spotted star clusters, galaxies and planets. We learned about black holes and meteorites, the Great Square of Pegasus and the Summer Triangle. Mr Green shared with us ancient myths and tales of how other cultures have interpreted the night sky. What an exciting introduction to a topic which, hopefully, will result in some fantastic projects which we plan to share on our summer Open Day.
Mrs McMillan, Teacher of Science
Bears, Jaguars and Lions Evensong
We look forward to welcoming parents of pupils in Bears, Jaguars and Lions to Club Evensong next Thursday at 16.30 in Chapel.
Mr Pickett, Deputy Head Pastoral
Year 7 Buddy Scheme
The ‘Buddy Scheme’ has started where our Year 7 pupils have been able to work with the children in the Pre-Prep. This has already proven to be a positive experience for them and they have been so keen to go down to Pre-Prep on their allotted time, and are returning with great excitement and enjoyment on their faces. What a great opportunity for the pupils to work with children in the Pre-Prep, by supporting them in the classroom with their reading and writing and also in the playground by playing and talking with them.
Mrs Rowley-Burns, Pastoral Coordinator
Alternative Music Parents' Evening
Some of our Visiting Music Teachers were not able to attend the Music Parents' Evening. So that all parents have the opportunity to discuss their child's progress, we have arranged for a second Music Parents' Evening on Wednesday 7th February in the Recital Room, when the following teachers will be available:
Mrs Astill (cello / double bass)
Mrs Cartwright (flute)
Miss Hooper-Roe (singing)
Mr Slane (singing)
Mr Hamper (drums) will be available to meet with parents from 4.10pm to 5.10pm on Monday 6th February in the Music Room.
Parents who are not available on these dates and who wish to contact their child's instrumental teacher individually should call Mrs Burleigh on 01933 233469 or email email@example.com.
Rock Pop & Blues
Our annual Rock Pop & Blues concert offers a platform for mainly pupil-led contemporary performances, from solo singers to homegrown rock bands.
This year's event is on Monday 26th February at 7.30pm in the Senior School Hall. The concert is open to all pupils in the Prep and Senior School - anyone interested should collect an entry form from Music.
The deadline for entries is Friday 9th February (the last day of this half term).
Attendance and punctuality at Orchestra rehearsal last Friday was still disappointing and many of those who did attend forgot to bring their music.
Members of Orchestra must ensure that they arrive promptly at 8.00am on Fridays and remember to bring their music.
Strings and Guitars Recital
Our next recital, on Monday 5th Februaryat 4.30pm in the Recital Room, will feature string and guitar players from Prep and Senior School.
Everyone is welcome to come along - entry is free and refreshments are served from 4.10pm.
String Quartet Rehearsals
Please would members of the String Quartet please make sure that they attend all rehearsals in the lead up to the Spring Concert.
Rehearsals are on Thursdays at 12.35pm in the Ensemble Room.

Prep Sport Update
Another couple of busy weeks on the sports field. This week we have played fixtures at various age groups against Quinton House, Swanbourne & Broughton Manor along with tournaments tomorrow at Witham Hall. In both Netball and Football it has been a successful week.
Next week begins with Year 7 and 8 Club Cross Country on Monday afternoon (parents are welcome to support). This has been re-scheduled from before Christmas when we had to cancel because of the snow. We also have fixtures next week against Bedford, King’s Ely and Laxton. I am sure by the end of the week pupils (and staff) will be ready for a restful half term.
Rugby Nationals- Epsom- Sunday 18th March
A reminder that this event takes place at Epsom for those students in the U9-U13 Rugby A squads. Please can I remind parents to inform the relevant coach if you are travelling direct to Epsom, or if your son requires transport provided by the school. Thanks in advance for this as it allows us to make arrangements for suitable transport provision.
