Headmaster’s Welcome
And they’re off! The Bursar often tells me that his favourite day of the year is the first day of the School year, when after a long period of relative silence around the site it’s – wham! – the hustle and bustle of children with happy faces and bundles of energy. It really isn’t a school without the kids here, it’s just a bunch of buildings.
So, I hope everyone has had a good first few weeks. There has been a great deal for everyone to get used to, in addition to the usual excitement around new timetables, new teachers, new people, etc. The new timings of the day seem to have started very well, and some early expected benefits are already evident. Having the whole Senior School at lunch at the same time is fab, and we’ve seen that manifested via the enlarged House Singing, which included Years 7 and 8 for the first time. Cracking into lessons asap in the morning is doing wonders for setting the tone, too.
On that note of setting the tone, parents will be aware of our drive on the 3Rs of Resilience, Responsibility and Respect. In my opening assembly to Years 7-10, I was able to thank the pupils for a noticeable uplift in the number of “Good mornings” I’ve heard, and we really are keen on getting these little things right so that Wellingborough can be as kind a place as possible. Long may it last!
Speaking of new things, the Colour Run was amazing! That is definitely a keeper, and I know our Charity Prefect, Ella Bryant, is probably exhausted through all of the praise she’s received for bringing the concept to the table. It was a superb way to get the year going, bring everyone together and have a bit of fun (as well as raising money and awareness for Cardiac Risk in the Young). Life and School can be very serious affairs, so injecting a little light-hearted frivolity that serves deeper purposes can only be a good thing.
As ever, there is much to look forward to, and plenty of opportunities to take. I’m confident this will be another incredible year and I look forward to it being shared here.
Andrew Holman, Headmaster
