Year 6 Trip to Hockerton Housing Project

News 25.09.2024 Whole School

On a bright, breezy and cold morning, our Year 6 students embarked on an exciting journey to the Hockerton Housing Project. The adventure began as we boarded the minibuses from school, filled with anticipation and curiosity.

Upon arrival, the pupils were immediately introduced to the eco-friendly lifestyle by using a composting toilet—an experience that brought them closer to nature right from the start!

Our tour of the grounds was both educational and inspiring. We learned about the unique water filtration system that operates from their lake, making Hockerton the only place in the UK with a gravity-fed water system.

The pupils were fascinated to discover that all the homes maintain a constant temperature of 22°C, regardless of the weather outside, thanks to Passive Solar Gain windows. This innovative design means the homes have no heating bills!

One of the highlights was exploring the bunker homes. Inside, we learned about energy consumption and were surprised to find out that of all the kitchen appliances, the kettle is the worst offender for energy use!

Exploring further, we visited the community gardens where residents grow their own food, including vegetables, chickens, and even have bee hives.

The concept of a carbon-zero lifestyle was brought to life as we understood how wind turbines contribute to their energy needs.

After a morning of learning, we enjoyed a delightful lunch before making our way back to school. It was a fabulous day out, filled with new knowledge and experiences, and we were lucky enough to stay dry throughout!

Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible. It was a memorable day that highlighted the importance of sustainable living and community spirit.
