National Youth Theatre Place for Year 10 Pupil

News 20.05.2024 Whole School

Year 10 pupil, Hugo Hutton-Iliff, has been awarded a place at one of the UK’s most prestigious theatre companies.

Every year The National Theatre holds nationwide auditions looking for new upcoming talent for their Youth Theatre Company. Their alumni include actors such as, Helen Mirren, Daniel Craig, Daniel Day-Lewis, Colin Firth, Orlando Bloom, Matt Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Ed Sheeran, Vanessa Kirby, and Sheridan Smith to name but a few.

In February this year, Hugo spent a full day auditioning in Birmingham where he worked alongside the NYT examiners ending the day with his key audition monologue, and was this week told that he had secured a place. Hugo’s achievement is especially remarkable given that over 6,500 actors aged 14-23 auditioned with just 8% of the applicants being accepted, and very few of those offers being for 14-15 year olds.

Commenting, Hugo said: “Being an actor is so much harder than people realise, so when I heard I’d gotten into one the most amazing theatre companies in the country, I was thrilled.

“I spend a lot of my spare time learning long scripts, rehearsing and taping my audition submissions, travelling to auditions, meeting directors, writers and producers etc, only to often be rejected right at the very last cut, but when I get a role, nothing beats being on set and becoming a part of something special.

“Working away from home with great film crews and casts is so much fun. I look forward to working with the NYT

team over the summer and seeing what new and exciting opportunities come my way.”
